Dietrich Klinge

Dietrich Klingå's bronze sculptures are beyond any portrait-likeness. "The simple cut of the facial features allows for no determination of individuality, age or sex. However, they are not to be interpreted as the representation of abstract terms in the sense of existentialistic sculpture. Klinge carves the actual form out of a block of wood by cutting the sculpture out of it with a chain saw. The sculptures, which have been cut in the wood, are then molded in bronze. This is their final appearance. The traces of the saw, the splintery structure of the wood, the veining or crack in the wood remain visible without preserving the original materiality. For Klinge, the bronze casting is not a matter of labor saving, but rather a means for alienation: a level of the conversion, where wood and bronze, cutting and molding, spontaneity and continuance are found in a paradox unity." (Gabriele Kerkhoff)
The human being is Klinges benchmark. The confrontation with the human existence and its illustration are in the center of his artistic work. Klinges figures are of an archetypical physicality. They are marked by a rough summary formulation and by a sign-like scarcity; the human figure is filtered in a stylized way and reduced to a plain cipher. Thus, no portrait-like features are to be found in his works. The simple cut of his heads bears no determination of the individual, age or sex. The forms are cut out of a block of wood with a chain saw and then cast in bronze. The cut ends and marks remain to be seen, because "Klinge is not interested in the elaborated, complete form but in the process, the cut." (G. Kerkhoff).
