Antoni Tapies
|
Antoni Tapies was born in 1923 in Barcelona. Nowadays Antoni Tapies is the world famous leader of the abstractionism art. The art of Tapies is the item for national pride of Spanish peoples the same as Juan Miro and Pablo Picasso.
After the World War 2nd in Spain where the dictatorship of Franco has established avant-gardism art and literature was in opposition to the regime. In the second half of the 1940s in Barcelona Antoni Tapies started to visit meetings of the young artists and literatures. They’ve created the avant-gardism magazine “Dau al Set”. Tapies had passion for the surrealism art, the ideas of Sartre and Heidegger and oriental philosophy.
Michele Tapie, French curator and art critic in 1952 curetted the exhibition “Other art” where he combined different artists of the world (Jackson Pollok, Jean Dubouffe, Jean Faurier, Walls and many others). Michele Tapie found in their art new way of post-war avant-gardism art: hard expression of the art manner, new style and energy of the painting surface — all what rejected compositional and esthetical modernism basics. This art that include “magic and violation” in the same time is very close to the art searches of Antoni Tapies and forming of his art manner is connected exactly to that.
Tapies experiments a lot, expanding the arsenal of textures by using coarse canvas or sackcloth, varying the thickness of the color layer and leaving part of the canvas uncovered. To consolidate color — bearing shape and enrich the surface texture Tapies added sand and crushed minerals, sometimes made scratches through the mass of color or cuts and stitched the base with coarse thread. Art of Tapies is monumental and restrained as the blank walls. Art researchers consider that his art symbolizing inner and physical pain of his youth where civil war, cultural depression and Franco’s dictatorship took place.
In the beginning of 1970s Tapies had experiments with objects and sculpture, techniques and materials. Since 1981 in co-operation with Hans Spinner he creates ceramic sculpture. Among the sculptural art of Antoni Tapies there is Picasso monument that was made by the order of City Council of Barcelona in 1982 - 1983.
Drawing and book graphics are significant for the art of Antoni Tapies. In co-authorship with literatures (Juan Brossa, Jeak Dupean and Jose-Miguel Ullan) he creates etchings and lithographs for the unique collection edition.
Tapies became world-famous after first solo exhibition in New York in 1953. Since 1950s his artworks expose in the leading galleries all over the world.
In the 1962 retrospective exhibitions in Guggenheim museum in New York and in the Kunsthouse in Zurich were dedicated to Antoni Tapies.
In the 1992 in Museum of Modern Art in New York retrospective of graphics of Antoni Tapies took place.
During the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993 installation of Antoni Tapies “Rinzen” (the one exposed in Spanish pavilion) got first award – Golden lion. /Tapies participated in the Venice Biennale in the 1954, 1958, 1982/.
In the beginning of 1990s Antoni Tapies had retrospective exhibitions in the Galerie National du Jeu de Paume in Paris and in the Guggenheim museum in New York.
In the 2000 in the Museum of Queen Sophia in Madrid exhibition dedicated to the art of Antoni Tapies took place.
In the 2004 in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (MACBA) was retrospective of Antoni Tapies.
