Joan Hernandez Pijuan's exhibit of graphic works

Gertsev Gallery and Cervantes Institute present Joan Hernandez Pijuan's exhibit of graphic works (Cervantes Institute exhibit hall) Gertsev Gallery together with Cervantes Institute opens an exhibit of graphic works of the famous Catalan artist Joan Hernandez Pijuan on October 20.

Joan Hernandez Pijuan was born in 1931 in Barcelona where he still lives and works. When Pijuan was 26 years old, he was awarded the Prize of the Fine Arts Museum board of directors at the National Exhibition in Alicante. A year later, while studying the technique of printmaking and lithograph in Paris, he was awarded the Second Prize for Painting, "Peintres Résidens". The most significant among many exhibits Pijuan participated in were VI Bienal for Printmaking, Ljublijana ("Malibor" Prize), I Bienal Internacional for Printmaking, Krakow, retrospective of engravings at the Museum of Art and History, Geneva (1979), exposition "Ten Years of Graphic Art, 1980 – 1990" at the Fine Arts Museum, Bilbao (1991), important exhibition projects "Espacios de silencio, 1972 – 1992" at the Reina Sofia National Museum, Madrid (1993), and "Volviendo a un lugar conocido, 1972-2002", Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2003) where Pijuan's paintings were displayed. Pijuan's artworks can be found in numerous museum and private collections such as Guggenheim Museum, New York, Brooklyn Museum of Art, National Library of Spain and Banco de España, Spain. Gertsev Gallery is displaying three thematic series of artworks from A.Gertsev's collection at the Cervantes Institute exhibit halls: "Gardens", "Flowers" and "Houses" created in 1997 – 2000. One can consider them as separate series or as one whole composition that proceeds in exploring Pijuan's favorite motives: space, reminiscences and emptiness. In his graphic works Pijuan creates unobtrusive poetic images by means of barely visible smooth lines. The artist applies one on another rhythms of different periodicity. At first view their correlation is accidental, but they submit to a distinct well thought plan and keep within a rigorous scheme set up by the artist. The opening will take place on Wednesday, October 20 at 7 p.m. at the Cervantes Institute exhibit hall (20А Novinskiy Bulvar).
